Specimen Requirements

Preferred:
Container/Tube: Lavender Top EDTA Tube
Minimum Volume: 1 mL EDTA Whole Blood
Collection Instructions:
Also Acceptable:
Container/Tube: Pediatric microtainers are acceptable: minimum volume = 500 uL.

For reflex Fructosamine:

Container/Tube: Gold Top (SST-gel) 

Minimum Volume: 1 mL Serum

Specimen Stability

Lavender EDTA Whole Blood

Ambient: 24 hours (at 25C)
Refrigerate: 4 Days (at 2-8C)

Whole blood EDTA specimens frozen at -70C can be tested up to 5 freeze/thaw cycles.

SST Serum (if applicable)

Ambient: 72 hours

Refrigerated (preferred): 7 days

Frozen: 60 days

Serum must be separated from cells within 2 hours of collection.

Reference Range

4.0 - 5.6% : Normal
5.7 - 6.4% : Prediabetes
> 6.5% : Diabetes

 

NOTE: If the Hemoglobin A1c result is greater than or equal to 8.0, the Fructosamine test order will reflex.

Provider Protocol: If the Hemoglobin A1c is <8.0 proceed with Surgery. If the result is greater than or equal to 8.0, the Fructosamine test will automatically be ordered and sent out. Fructosamine testing is performed at Mayo Clinical Laboratories. (See the Fructosamine-Mayo entry in this catalog.) If the Fructosamine result is less than or equal to 292 mcmol/L proceed with Surgery. If the result is 293 mcmol/L or greater, consider post-poning Surgery until these guidelines are met.
